RIP Bura Shihan

JKA India condoles the demise of Bura Shihan 8th Dan, Member of the International Shihankai, memberof the Board of Director of the JKA from Europe and Chief Instructor of JKA Denmark. He was also the Technical Ditrector of JKA Europe.

JKA India regrets to announce the sudden Demise of Fujikiyo Omura Sensei 8th Dan, Member of the International Shihan Kai and Board of Director for the JKA from the Asia Region.
JKA India's Chief Instructor had this to say - “ I first met him in 1982 and again in 1985 when he was my opponent in the 1st World Shoto Cup. I spoke to him about coming to Mumbai as he was in a nearby country, however it was only in 1989 that he could come here. After his visit, we would meet every year in Bangkok at the JKA Asia Oceania Federation Seminar and Conference. The last time I met him was in December 2019 in Bangkok. During the lockdown he returned to Japan and we were scheduled to meet this year in Bangkok in December but it was not to be as I got the news that he had passed away. Rest in Peace Omura Sensei. We will miss your Leadership skills and your great personality.”
JKA India conveys it condolences to his family and members of JKA Thailand.

JKA India is grieved to announce the demise of Yaguchi Shihana few days back. He was our first Chief Instructor's Sasaki Shoichi Shihan's teacher at the Nihon University. Yaguchi Sensei was 91. When asked about him, this is what our curent Chief Instructor Anand Ratna Shihan said - "I first met him in 1982 during the All Japan Tournament and regularly whenever he came for all the World Cups. The last time I met him was in 2018 in Tokyo, when the JKA gave him an award. Although he was with the ISKF, Yaguchi Sensei never left the JKA in fact, Yaguchi Sensei was appointed the Technical Advisor for the JKA. I am very proud of the fact that I am of his lineage, I will always remember the advice he gave me- "Keep Training". REST IN PEACE Sensei. You are gone but not forgotten."

Seizo Izumiya Shihan 7th Dan JKA Headquarters instructor conducted the monsoon camp this year at the Shyam Mandir hall in Raipur. Izumiya Sensei truly lived up to his motto which is : "Devote yourself to karate, discover who you are" . The interest generated by his lessons during the 3 days of training exceeded everyone's expectations. Teaching without any complicated explainations, Shihan showed the senior group how to execute movements generating speed and kime. Explaining the basics, Izumiya Shihan's demonstrations used methods that were simple to understand and easy to execute physically, confirming to the participants the reason as to why he is so much in demand all over the world. Like every camp small children also participated in this camp and there were a good number of them. Izumiya Sensei took special care to ensure that the little ones were also taken care of by teaching them every day. While explaining Kumite, he showed the participants the manner by which the body could be made to move faster and to a greater distance by using the right musculature. Using partner drills, he made the participants understand the methodology so that the participants could execute the wazas in the right manner. Known for his varied explainations of the bunkai in Kata, Izumiya shihan made all the participants train in the bunkai for Heian Nidan, giving them various explainations for the movements. Izumiya Shihan was assisted by Ratna Sensei who conducted separate training for the juniors on all the days. The monsoon camp was a complete success and the instructors have decided to have the next monsoon camp in the city of Surat in the state of Gujarat.

The Championships saw a record number of entries this year exceeding 1700 in total. This year saw the honours being equally divided among all the states. Although Meghalaya retained it's hold on many of the junior events, Assam also showed some good performances in the juniors and Ladies categories. The senior events saw some good performances being shown by many states. The Grand Champion of the event was Neeraj Dhawan from UP who won both kata & kumite in the men's category. The Men's Team Kata Event was won by Meghalaya and the Men's Team Kumite Event by Maharashtra. The Ladies Individual Kata was won by Karuna Horo of Karnataka & the Ladies Individual Kumite event was won by Bijoya Devri Hazarika of Assam.
The growing number of entries each year especially in the kyu level division at the nationals brought about a major decision to hold the Kyu level Event separate from the Regular Nationals. Kobayashi Sensei's Training Camp
26th July to 9th August 2011

Prior to departing to Thailand for The Funakoshi Gichin Cup 12th World Karate-do Championships JKA India held a 2 week coaching camp for Team members with HQ Instructor Kunio Kobayashi Sensei from 26/7 to 9/8. Two sessions were held every day. The first session was held early morning from 6AM to 7:30AM where Sensei concentrated only on basic Kihon and Kata and the second session in the evening was from 6:30PM to 8:30PM devoted only to kumite training. Sensei's attention to detail was amazing and having just the participants and coaches along with just 4 non team members when training ensured that the team members got an exposure to the kind of training that JKAI members have so far never experienced. Everyday at the end of the second session, Kobayashi sensei also delivered a small lecture to the participants of the camp. At the end of the camp, it was clear to all that the attitude of the team had changed as a result of both the hard training and his pep talk. Those seniors who took the opportunity to train included Chairman Sensei Anil Sinha who made it a point to take time off from his busy schedule to come all the way to Mumbai to train, Prakash Sorap from Maharashtra & B.S.Ganguly from West Bengal. Coaches Prakash Kumar from Karnataka, Agnelo Rodgrigues from Goa and Hitesh Jariwala from Gujarat trained with the kids to bond with them over the two weeks. Kobayashi Sensei made a deep impression not only on all the students but also on the parents and guardians who saw his dedication while teaching. The Training Camp defintely gave JKA India a much improved result.

JKA INDIA'S 28th National Tournament
WINNERS
2011
Men's Division - Shetty (Kumite) - Dhawan (Kata)
Women's Division- Almeida (Kumite) - Kolipaka (Kata)

The training Camp was followed by the 28th JKAI National Karate Championships which had a record  513 members from 21 states  participating in the 3-day long event which commenced on the 26th  & concluded on 28th January 2011.

The uniqueness of the JKA India Tournament is that it is the only Tournament in India that still follows the Budo aspect of Karate and the only  one  in India  that is conducted as per the original rules of Karate Tournaments set up by the JKA in 1956 of the Shobu Ippon matches with the rule of sun dome and kime being adhered to, these aspects were the ones that actually made karate popular in the modern era.  In India, the JKA India propagates the aspect of Budo Karate through it’s National Championships and the increase in the number of entries each year speaks volumes for it’s growing popularity.

The 28th edition of the National Championships saw the introduction of Events at a Kyu Level Category in the Tournament. This attempt to see the response of the pre-black belt level students being encouraged to participate at the National Level was received with great enthusiasm by the members.

The Junior Nationals this time around was without the entry of traditional Winners of the State of Meghalaya being absent due to the sudden illness of Sensei Stephan Leong. The Junior events saw the emergence of Gujurat State bringing out some potential future Senior Champions.

The Senior Event had Chandrashekhar Shetty former National Champion participating after a gap of nearly 14 years and he won the Individual Kumite Title defeating last year’s winner N. Dhawan of Delhi after overcoming a spirited challenge in the Semi Final from Dojo mate and last year’s runner –up  S.Tiwari. Neeraj. Dhanwan reached the final defeating Gaurav Kumar from Bihar in the Semi Final. The Final which is a San bon Shobu or the best of three Ippons match  saw Shetty win 1½ :  ½ against Neeraj Dhawan.

The Team Kumite event saw a lot of older senior members take part along with their much younger team mates. The event was won by Maharashtra in a tense final with Bihar which went to the wire. The third place was won Jharkhand who defeated Goa.

The Individual Kata title was retained by Neeraj Dhawan with kata Nijushiho. The second place went to Vikash Sahu from Chhatisgarh with kata Souchin and the third place was won by Maharashtra’s Akshay Vernekar with kata Jutte.  The Team Kata Titile was won by Maharashtra with Jharkhand and Goa in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The women’s division of the tournament saw the rise of a new star in the form of  Priyanka Kolipaka from Gujarat, who despite having senior grades in the same category, outshone the competition in Kata winning it in great style with a very good performance of Kata Jion. Bhagyashri Khot from Maharashtra and Vaishali Almeida from Goa took second and third places respectively.   However her lack of experience in Kumite saw her lose the semifinal match against her opponent. The Kumite event was won by former National Champion Vaishali Almeida from Goa who defeated Bhagyashri Khot in the final.

The Tournament was also a short listing of potential members who would be participating in the JKA Funakoshi Gichin 12th World Cup to be held in Thailand in August this year. A final Selection for the JKA India National Team has been scheduled for the 23rd of April in Mumbai.  The Head Instructor for the original JKA Body in India, Sensei Anand Ratna also announced that he has also arranged for a former All Japan Champion to train the selected members for a 3 week training camp before the team finally leaves for the World Championships.   Detailed results
